A guided walking tour around an historic survivor of Penge Common, seen through the eyes of the people who once lived here.
A one-hour stroll around 13 acres of public park which was once part of the ancient Penge Common; now surrounded by 19th century villas, 1970s social housing and the last remains of the Croydon Canal. The quirks of history somehow allowed Betts Park to survive enclosure, a Victorian land-grab, and heavy WW2 bombing. Join a relaxing walk through the park to hear the story of why it exists and tales of the commoners engulfed by a new world. The tour is free and suitable for people with limited mobility. Dogs are welcome, there is plenty of space for picnicking and a playground for the kids. If you enjoy the tour, you can make a donation to Friends of Betts Park which will help us with future improvements.

The tour will start at the high end of the park near where Anerley Road crosses the canal. There is free on-street parking in adjacent roads. The nearest railway station is Anerley (zone 4), served by the Overground-Windrush line. The nearest tram stop is Birkbeck. Bus stops Y and U are served by bus numbers 157, 354 and 358.

All paths in the park are hard-surface with no steps and some gentle inclines. There is one steeper incline to reach the canal which can be circumvented via an alternative path.
