Woolwich Works, carved out of five historic buildings, is now a cultural destination encompassing a theatre, music venue, rehearsal studios and much more.
The centre piece of the project is ‘’Building 41’’ which has an impressive performance space, external courtyard, five studios which double- up as rehearsal and performance spaces, a café, bar and river facing events space.
Bennetts Associates achieved this through identifying the uses the building could fulfill with its existing structure, instead of undertaking significant work on the building for it to accommodate a purpose it is less naturally aligned with.
Through a light retrofit Bennetts reimagined a historic building for contemporary use.
We hope that industry professionals and budding professionals (training architects and trade apprentices) might come and see what is possible when we work with existing buildings and structures. Likewise, those interested in the arts. In a time when we are losing our arts & cultural hubs, Woolwich Works was a necessary project for making the arts accessible to local communities.
We want to empower people to demand more from their built environment and demand that our buildings serve a function that is necessary and useful to the people who frequent them.
Join us as Rob Bearyman (Associate Director- Bennetts Associates) and Matthew Curtis (Associate- Bennetts Associates) guide us through Woolwich Works and stay with us for the Q&A and mingling after.
This event is one in a series of tours which are linked to our Retrofit 24 exhibition, check out our website for all tours and other events.
