This is the story of how the inner London Parishes of Victorian London came to East Finchley and opened the first municipal cemeteries in the country. How, during the second half of the 19th century London reimagined burial from a macabre health problem of grossly overcrowded inner city graveyards, into the oasis of green cemeteries we see today.
Followed by a question and answer session with the film maker The London Borough of Barnet’s Heritage Officer Hugh Petrie.
Our host is the Phoenix Cinema with a chance to hear about its history and future plans. An independent single-screen community cinema in East Finchley, built in 1910, it has one of the most beautiful auditoriums in the country with original art deco fixtures and fittings, and is grade 2 listed.
