The Geological Society: Open House

18 June 2024

12:30 -14:00

Geologists reimagine the world we live in continuously by analysing the history of our earth and to be able to understand and navigate it in the future.

Join us for an open house and learn more about the society and incredible history and stories our building holds. They'll be a short talk on the William Smith map followed by a chance to view the upper library and event spaces.

What is Geology? Geology is the science that deals with the earth's physical structure and substance, its history, and the processes that act on it.

One Geologist, William Smith, created the first Geological Map of the UK. Smith's colourful and advanced geological map was based on his observation that strata (rock layers) could be identified by the fossils they contain. He observed that the layers always seemed to appear in the same order and realised it was possible to predict where specific types of rock could be found across the country. Smith’s map and ideas paved the way for a better understanding of geological time and laid the founding principles for geological surveys worldwide. His concept of using fossils to identify rocks is still very important today.

The Society is always looking to younger generations for ideas to the future. Learn more some about the outreach programs and educational events that the Geological Society offer.
