DNCO's Patrick Eley and Alan Stevenson, authors of a new wayfinding book, will host a breakfast discussion on how wayfinding can help those who use it to reimagine a place.
The talk will highlight how signs are conversations between people, and like all conversations, they can be quiet and discreet or loud and abrasive. They can also be funny, uplifting and kind; a gentle nudge in the right direction and a guiding hand on your elbow through the confusion. Or they can be sharp, threatening and mean. From a passive-aggressive fridge note and the stomach-churning instructions of border control to the ‘welcome home’ on a door mat, signs create all sorts of emotions and have a very real effect on how we feel about a place. They can do a lot more than just direct you to the loos.
At the breakfast, Patrick and Alan will be launching a new wayfinding book — 'Straightforward. How wayfinding works and why strategy matters'— which explores the why, the where and the how, looking at the science and strategy behind signs and wayfinding and their effect on our sense of place.
