Pride Float

Location: London Pride
Date: 2018
Status: Temporary
Client: Architects LGBT+

In 2018, the LFA partnered with Architects LGBT+ with the launch of a Pride Float competition that would represent the architecture industry in London’s Pride 2018 celebrations. The brief – exploring identity – was open to entries from young architects, recent graduates and more established practices.

Hawkins\Brown’s design – A Space for All – was selected by a panel of experts and was taken to the streets on the 7th June 2018 as part of London Pride.

A Space for All takes a scaffold structure – representing the built environment industry and construction trade – in a simple house shape with a pitched roof, covered in graphics and bright paint designed by a team of LGBTQ+ architects.

The familiar domestic shape at once references the architecture profession, and also the idea of a ‘queer family’ and support network, highlighting the dual nature of life as a LGBTQ+ person in the built environment industry.

The float was animated during London Pride 2018 celebrations as it travelled through central London.
