Lunch Break by studio KHBT with Ottmar Hörl

The winning design ‘Lunch Break’ – an installation by creative architecture studio KHBT in collaboration with artist Ottmar Hörl – saw 35 gilded angels sitting on randomly arranged bars, suspended from the existing wire grid of the ‘St Paul’s Plinth’.
The project celebrated what can happen at the creative boundary of art and architecture (in response to the 2019 LFA theme “boundaries”), as well as providing a charming and eye-catching temporary landmark for the City of London. The piece created a strong conceptual and visual link to St Paul’s Cathedral, and the golden cross on top of the dome in particular. The rich interior and ornamental nature of the Cathedral was reflected by the intricate detail of each sculpted angel.

KHBT is a creative studio set up by Karsten Huneck and Bernd Trümpler in London and Berlin. KHBT has consistently created spatial works of local and international significance which are published widely as well as winning various awards such as the prestigious Young Architect Of The Year Award (YAYA) in 2009 where KHBT was gaining the first ever ‘special commendation’ in the competitions history. Karsten and Bernd are also partners of the experimental architectural network osa_office for subversive architecture which acts as a platform for spatial research that feeds into the practice.
